City of Valley to conduct ice pigging exercise

Residents will experience an interruption in their water service during this time

VALLEY, NE.—May 31, 2024—PeopleService will be working with a contractor to conduct an ice pigging exercise on Tuesday June 4 and Wednesday June 5 between 8 AM and 6 PM.

Ice Pigging™ is a pipe cleaning technique in which ice slurry is moved through the water mains to remove unwanted material, sediment, or product residues from the pipes. The buildup of sediment is caused by iron and manganese in our soil that was deposited into the water mains and service lines before the water was treated in the City of Valley. Removing some of the excess sediment through ice pigging should reduce the instances when discolored water is present due to sediment moving through the pipes when usage fluctuates.

When the exercise is being conducted on your street, you will have an interruption in your water service and streets will be partially blocked to allow contractors access to the fire hydrants. Each area is expected to take one to two hours however timing may change as they are working through each street. When the water is turned back on, residents should run their faucets for up to 15 minutes as they may experience a discoloration or odor.

If the discoloration or odor persists more than 15 minutes, you may contact the utility clerk or report the issue through the online citizen concern form located on our website or app:
